It’s crazy how humankind went from stick-figure antelopes on cave walls all the way to 3D animation and VR. What the heck happened? In a way, kids make that same trajectory in just a few short years, from stick figures on paper to smudges of paint all over your walls and carpeting.
In Picture Perfect, kids used math to scale up BIG pictures (with a lot less mess). Everyone drew their own small section of an image, but on its own big piece of paper. Then kids connected the pages puzzle-style to make a giant version of the picture! Sometimes a person’s arm or a car tire lined up across the seams; sometimes it looked more like Salvador Dali.
The point is, this gave insight into how billboards and murals are made. And it used math. If a bird’s beak crossed an edge halfway up, both artists drawing that beak could boost its chances by drawing it halfway up.
Now keep up the fun and the learning at home! Print this 4 x 4 grid for your kid to draw their own picture. Cut up the pieces and hand them to family members and friends. Everyone draws one little section, then tape it all together and see what you get!
