Meet Brittany Johnson and Michelle Riofrio, one of our many dynamic coach duos who have been leading K-2 Crazy 8s clubs in Brewster, New York since 2024. They had so many kids sign up that they ran SIX Season 1 clubs in a single school year! Want to see what they’re up to this year? Read on—and don’t miss their feature in the school newsletter!
What inspired you to become a Crazy 8s coach?
We both love math and love to teach it as well. Mrs. Johnson had a positive experience at her previous school with the club, so she suggested we lead it here in Brewster.
What’s the most memorable moment you’ve had with your club so far?
Our most memorable moment was leading our first club in Glow-in-the-Dark Geometry. We were apprehensive about the students’ enthusiasm for the club, but as soon as they saw their shape creations come to light, they were super excited!
What’s the funniest or most creative thing a student has said or done during a club activity?
During Shooting Stars, students came up with creative ways to throw their origami stars to see which way would make them fly the farthest. Some students threw it like a frisbee, while others threw it like a baseball.
What's your favorite Crazy 8s activity?
Everyone enjoyed building with glowsticks and seeing them glow during Glow-in-the-Dark Geometry! The kids also really enjoyed Crazy 8s Race with the cars racing around the 8 track and learning about multiplication as well.
How have you seen your students grow or change through Crazy 8s?
We witnessed students gain more confidence in math. They persevered through challenges.
If you could describe Crazy 8s in one word, what would it be?
FUN!
What’s a tip you’d share with new coaches starting their clubs?
Know your audience! Differentiate the lessons depending on ability and grade level. Use the Crazy 8s lesson plan suggestions entitled, “Adjustments for Young Clubs,” which are very helpful.
What’s something surprising or unexpected you’ve learned as a coach?
The lessons are suitable and enjoyable for all grade levels and abilities. It’s wonderful to see students with different abilities engaged in the lessons and excited about learning math!
